Hot Water Cylinders

Vented & Unvented Cylinder Installations, Repairs & Maintenance — G3 Authorised

Whether your hot water has stopped working, your cylinder is leaking, or you're looking to upgrade to a more efficient system, I provide a full range of hot water cylinder services across Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and outer North London. All unvented cylinder work is carried out and certified in accordance with Building Regulations by a G3 authorised engineer.

Vented Cylinders

A vented hot water cylinder is one of the most common hot water systems found in older UK homes. Connected to a cold water storage tank, usually located in the loft, it relies on gravity to feed water through the system. Simple and reliable, vented cylinders can last for many years with relatively little maintenance, but like any system, they require occasional attention as components age and wear.

Common problems include a faulty immersion heater, a failing thermostat, corrosion inside the cylinder, a deteriorating expansion pipe, or a slow leak from connections and fittings. In older properties, it's not unusual to find cylinders that are simply past their useful life, losing heat quickly, struggling to maintain temperature, or showing signs of external corrosion that suggest the tank itself is nearing the end of its service life.

I carry out repairs and replacements on vented cylinders of all makes and sizes, including direct and indirect models. If your hot water is taking too long to heat up, running out faster than it used to, or you've noticed damp around the cylinder cupboard, it's worth getting it checked before a small issue becomes a larger and more expensive problem. I'll always give you an honest assessment of whether a repair or a full replacement is the more cost-effective option for your situation.

Unvented Cylinders

An unvented hot water cylinder is a sealed, pressurised system connected directly to the mains water supply, no cold water tank required. This means faster flow rates, consistent pressure throughout the home, and hot water delivered at mains pressure to every outlet. Unvented cylinders are increasingly common in modern UK homes and offer a significant upgrade over older vented systems. However, because they operate under pressure, they must be installed, serviced, and repaired by a G3 authorised engineer, a legal requirement under Building Regulations Part G. I am G3 authorised and carry out unvented cylinder installations, repairs, and maintenance to the required standard, with all work certified in accordance with Building Regulations.

Common faults with unvented cylinders include a faulty or weeping pressure relief valve, a failed expansion vessel, a defective thermostat or thermostatic control valve, a failed immersion heater, or loss of system pressure. If your unvented cylinder is making unusual noises, discharging water from the relief valve, or failing to heat water to the correct temperature, it should be inspected promptly, these are signs that a safety-critical component may need attention.

Immersion Heaters

An immersion heater is an electric heating element fitted inside a hot water cylinder, used either as the primary source of water heating or as a backup when the boiler is unavailable. Over time, immersion heaters can fail due to limescale build-up on the element, particularly common in hard water areas like Hertfordshire, a burnt-out element, a faulty thermostat, or a failed cut-out safety device. Common signs of a failing immersion heater include water that takes much longer than usual to heat up, water that doesn't reach the correct temperature, or a complete loss of hot water when the boiler is functioning normally. I carry out immersion heater replacements on both vented and unvented cylinders, sourcing the correct element for the specific make and model of your cylinder and ensuring the replacement is fitted safely and correctly.

Routine Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your hot water cylinder, whether vented or unvented, is essential for both safety and efficiency. For unvented cylinders in particular, periodic checks are strongly recommended and in some cases required, including testing the temperature and pressure relief valve, checking the expansion vessel charge, verifying thermostat settings, and inspecting all connections for signs of wear or leakage. Routine maintenance can identify small issues before they become costly problems, and helps ensure your system continues to operate safely and efficiently.
